Lange then fell in love with the San Francisco scene and opened a photo studio where she took portraits of the city\u2019s bohemian and artistic elite. Then the Great Depression hit, and everything changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One day in 1933, Lange is said to have looked out the window at a bread line that started near her downtown San Francisco studio. \u201cLange dared to venture out with her bulky camera, taking the picture we now know as \u2018<em>White Angel Bread Line\u2019<\/em>,\u201d says Sarah Hermanson Meister, curator of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/calendar\/exhibitions\/5079\"><em>Dorothea Lange: Words &amp; Pictures<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and accompanying\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/store.moma.org\/books\/exhibition-catalogues\/dorothea-lange-words-pictures---hardcover\/900104-900104.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjwwr32BRD4ARIsAAJNf_08kkmShr_GDQHCUkmh2w8e2V9dX2ad2o3491GKQdrUBNr3c9x1dEEaAkYPEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\">exhibition catalogue<\/a>\u00a0(The Museum of the Modern Art).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce she took that picture, it\u2019s as if she never looked back.
